Questions, answered
What counts as a character?
Every letter, number, space and punctuation mark that a natural voice speaks. A typical page is 1,500 to 2,500 characters, and a minute of listening is about 900. Reading with your device's own voices never uses characters, and replaying audio Handwrite has already made on your device doesn't either.
How do I turn on natural voices?
Natural Speechify voices are off until you choose them. Turn on Allow cloud voices in the app's Settings, then pick a voice in the Voices tab. Text you play with a cloud voice is sent to Handwrite's server and Speechify to make the audio.
How do plans renew?
Plans are monthly subscriptions that renew automatically through the App Store until you cancel. Your characters refill at the start of each billing month.
Do unused characters roll over?
No. Unused characters reset when your plan renews, and the free 2,000 characters reset on the first of every month.
How do I cancel?
Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, then Subscriptions, and choose Handwrite. You keep your characters until the end of the month you paid for.
Can I buy a plan on the website?
Plans are bought in the Handwrite app for iPhone and iPad, through your Apple Account. The website shows your plan and remaining characters once you sign in.
Does my plan work on all my devices?
Yes. Your characters belong to your Handwrite account, so they are shared across your iPhone, iPad and the web reader when you sign in with the same account.
What happens if I run out?
Handwrite carries on from the same sentence with your device's own voice, so you can keep listening. Natural voices come back when your month renews or when you choose a bigger plan.
